“Shonen Knife to remain one of the only bands around that is able to fully encompass both the cuteness and keen-ness after which they were named.” – Stereogum
“After 35 years, Shonen Knife is still firing on all punk-and garage-infused six cylinders on the girl trio’s new Adventure album.” – MAGNET Magazine
“Authentic, moving and daft, and the true heirs to the Ramones, Shonen Knife are just great.” –Classic Rock Magazine
After decades of making music and touring the world, it’s common to see the tribulations of life weighing down on an artist and their songwriting. Yet, Shonen Knife, hurtling towards their fourth decade of international fame, are once again proving their everlasting optimism and dedication to effervescent bubblegum punk with their 19th studio album Sweet Candy Power (out June 5, 2019, via Good Charamel Records).
FLOOD Magazine partnered with the band to premiere the record’s first single, “Dizzy” which they aptly described as a “hyper-catchy pop-rock confection that takes up residence in a listener’s head after the first sing-along chorus” The video was filmed in one of the band’s favorite hometown punk dives, Fandango in Osaka, Japan, and features choreographed dance moves to emphasize the 70’s pop vibes.
“[Sweet Candy Power] is an homage to my favorite rock music from the 1960s and 1970s,” explains frontwoman Naoko. “I put all of my enjoyment, entertainment, joy, and delight into my songs. Inspired by my experience during tours and my daily life, I wrote the lyrics with fun and a little bit of irony. I hope people get happy through this album.”
In support of the record, Shonen Knife will be touring in Europe in May/June including Primavera Sound Barcelona 2019 and are in the throes of planning a 2019 North American tour this fall.

Since their pure DIY beginnings in 1981, Osaka, Japan’s Shonen Knife have been building a faithful following of music enthusiasts and the alternative rock elite. Their relentless journey secured the band’s place as one of the pioneer ambassadors of Japanese rock music and culture on the international stage.
They’ve enjoyed sharing their ever-evolving career for decades, sharing the stage with rock royalty such asNirvana, Sonic Youth, and The Ramones. After 38 years, the band still receives rave reviews from outlets like Noisey who said, “Japan’s Shonen Knife certainly aren’t acting their age… Full of shimmering girl group melodies and immediately hummable guitar lines, ‘Jump Into The New World’ will make you leave you bummers behind”
With incendiary and icon-building appearances on Lollapalooza, MTV’s 120 Minutes, Beavis & Butthead, as well as the track “Buttercup (I’m A Super Girl)” written for Cartoon Network’s The Powerpuff Girls, Shonen Knife have secured their rock-solid cult status as they march into the future.
