Country singer-songwriter Kimberly Morgan York unveils “Keep On Goin’,” the title track from her upcoming LP, slated for release on July 22.
The album comprises the talents of Kimberly (vocals, guitar), Scott Baxendale (guitar), David Barbe (bass, engineering) Carlton Owens of Cracker (drums), Jay Gonzales from the Drive-by Truckers (piano), Matt Stoessel of Cracker (pedal steel), and Adam Poulin (violin).
Kimberly explains, “My life has been a conveyor belt of constant change. New cities, new careers, new families…. but the one constant in my life is and has always been, music. When anyone asks me how I would define myself, whether artistically or individually, I point to three constants. I’m a woman, I’m a mother, and I’m a musician.”
Kimberly began singing early on – in church when she was three years old. A little later, she learned guitar and started writing songs. Later still, while attending Cornell University, she started performing, followed by turning into a musical gypsy, who, when she landed in Sausalito, decided to pursue music seriously.
She married Brad Morgan of the Drive-by Truckers in 2003, followed by playing with Southern Bitch. The arrival of her daughter hit the pause button on her career. She and Brad divorced, followed by a second marriage, which ended in divorce. Then she met and married Kevin York.
Kimberly shares, “All of my music is based on real-life…heartache, perseverance, joy, abuse, struggle, victory, and love. I want listeners to be able to connect to my music… to see reflections of their own stories in mine. I hope my songs make people feel less alone in their journey. I also want to entertain them and inspire people to laugh and let go.”
“Keep On Goin’” rolls out on a contagious country rhythm featuring a fat bassline and snapping percussion. Kimberly’s luscious, drawling vocals imbue the lyrics with warm, creamy inflections, vaguely reminiscent of Dolly Parton blended with Patsy Cline as the delicious crying of the pedal steel gives the tune languid, luminous savors.
Down-to-earth yet oh so alluring, “Keep On Goin’” delivers a straightforward rhythm and the crème de la crème voice of Kimberly Morgan York.
