Texas-based soul singer-songwriter Alesia Lani drops her brand-new single, “Breaking Me Down,” a song about cutting off toxic relationships to protect one’s happiness, via Trailing Twelve Records.
Alesia Lani explains, “What inspired me to write this record was pure rage. Being a product of someone’s self-projections and no longer accepting that type of energy.”
Produced by Tim Palmer (U2, Pearl Jam, The Cure) and Jon Keyz (Gary Clark Jr.), “Breaking Me Down” features acclaimed guitarist Jackie Venson.
“Breaking Me Down” follows on the heels of “I Don’t Mind,” which received vast praise from elite music publications, and was featured on VH1’s Caught In The Act: Unfaithful, along with a prior release, “What You Know About It.”
Lani has shared the stage with legends like George Clinton, The Ohio Players, and Guns N’ Roses, as well as artists such as Lizzo, Megan Thee Stallion, Childish Gambino, and Billie Eilish. She’s performed at SXSW, Toronto’s Indie Week Fest, Austin City Limits, and Thailand’s Jai Thep Festival.
“Breaking Me Down” opens on grimy, muscular guitars riding a potent rhythm as Lani’s luscious femme fatale voice imbues the lyrics with sultry, scowling energy. Vibrant harmonies add depth and dimension, followed by the tune descending to soft, shimmering textures topped by Lani’s fluttering vocals. Venson’s brawny guitar and crushing percussion push the sound back up to a surging, snarling level.
“Boy you just say what you feel what you feel / Who ya tryna convince / You’re on the defense / When I’m the real one by your side / But you get so mad / You’re so relentless / And I will never understand why / You try so hard at breaking me down / Breaking me down / Breaking me down.”
The juxtaposition of wickedly dark energy with delicate, translucent coloration gives the song a captivating harmonic shift.
Alesia Lani has it going on! “Breaking Me Down” thrums with intoxicating dynamics highlighted by the crème de la crème voice of Alesia Lani.
